What else would I make on Thanksgiving? This was an ideal pre-dinner aperitivo for our quarantine Thanksgiving feast for four. Who wouldn’t enjoy a French 75 built with cranberry syrup? Follow the berry syrup recipe on simmering until berries break open.

Spirit Gin
Cocktail family Highball
Flavors Bubbly · Tart
  • 1 oz London Dry Gin
  • 1/2 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 oz Cranberry Syrup
  • 2 oz Champagne
  • Add all but champagne to shaker.
  • Shake well, then strain into champagne flute or coupe.
  • Top with Champagne and stir gently.
  • Float a lemon twist and a cranberry.

Here’s a tasty combination of allspice liqueur with two great amari.

Flavors Bitter · Boozy · Sweet
  • 1 1/2 oz London Dry Gin
  • 3/4 oz Amaro Montenegro
  • 3/4 oz Aperol
  • 2 dashes Boker’s or Pimento Bitters
  • Combine all ingredients in shaker.
  • Fill tin with ice and shake for 15 seconds until well diluted.
  • Double-strain into a chilled coupe and garnish.
  • Peeler or Knife

As the stress of the COVID-19 lockdown took hold, I decided to buy the ingredients for an Aviation, a drink I’d had at Momofuku in NY many years prior. Not expecting to be in NYC anytime soon, I took stock of our meager bottle collection. I had the gin (3 bottles of Hendrick’s for some reason), but had to track down bottles of Creme de Violette and Maraschino liqueur. And so down the rabbit hole I went.

  • 2 oz Junipero Gin
  • 1/4 oz Creme de Violette
  • 1/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • Place ingredients in shaking tin, add ice, shake for 15 seconds.
  • Double-strain into a chilled coupe glass, lower a Luxardo cherry into bottom of glass, express lemon twist and discard

Another play on the classic Last Word recipe, this version swaps in Gran Classico for Luxardo Maraschino. Invented in the 2010s by Dan Chadwick and posted to the active online cocktail community, Kindredcocktails.com. Gran Classico is a fortified wine, something like Lillet Blanc.
