I’ve spent some time this weekend working on digitizing and editing videos we’ve taken of Sam over the last six months. The big result of that project was a DVD with all the clips, but I’m slowly working on short outtakes for the blog. I’m using YouTube.com, one of many Web 2.0 sites allowing user-generated content like this to have a (free!) home on the web. This should make it easier for everyone to see these clips. Up first – Sam’s very first visit to the beach when we were in Sarasota in March, visiting Amy’s mom and dad. Click on the ‘play’ triangle in the image above to start video playback in this window – total run time is 2:47.

MiniReview: Thumbsucker
Based on the Walter Kirn novel of the same name, Thumbsucker is an interesting little film by first-time director Mike Mills (no relation to the R.E.M. bass player). The film captures well the strained relationships between a teen boy who still sucks his thumb and his screwed up parents, classmates and teachers. Tilda Swinton is great as the mom neither the audience or her son really understand until late in the film, and Benjamin Bratt has a nice cameo as a cocaine-addicted TV star. Vince Vaughn, Vincent D’Onofrio and Keanu Reeves also put in good performances – especially Reeve’s Zen-master orthodontist. The story is bittersweet, and full of very authentic moments – a nice little indie flick worth checking out. Two-and-a-half stars.
Wine 2.0
Okay all you geeks out there – now for something really useful coming out of the
Web 2.0 biddness – a fresh-for-2006 site to let you research, catalog and of course – TAG – your wine drinking – WineLog.net. The site includes a nice bit of integration with mobile, allowing a user to send wine details to a portable device. Along with trying to remember to send moblog photos of any wines we drink to the Flickr Wine Memory Jogger group. It’s free to register on WineLog, so give it a try – I know I will.
Class of ‘84

Three cheers for our new rep to the old alumni magazine Images, Mary Gilbreath! She took it upon herself to organize the original slackers, the Atlanta members of the Savannah Country Day School class of 1984 for cocktails and dinner. I literally had not seen some of these folks since graduation, and it was great fun to catch up. Attending were Mary Gilbreath, George Petkovich, Louise Mulherin, Mallory Troxler, Michael Friedman, Alex Cann, Kirk Lanier and myself. There was much discussion of people not in attendance (or course) and general catching up. We gathered at the Old Vinings Inn, and the food and drinks were yummy. I took a few photos – the gallery is here.
