We marked the birth of the new Cabbagetown campus as well as the 7th birthday of the Grant Park lcoation with the annual Grant Park Cooperative Preschool Birthday Party this Saturday. The party was held this year at the Cabbagetown campus playground where the C-town kids have spent the last couple of days getting to know their new home away from home. There was a wonderful Nigerian drummer ‘Bisi’ who entranced all the kids, collage-making, lots of FOOD, and good company. Click here to see a collection of photos from the event.

Wow. It’s hard to believe, but in a little over a week Sam will be heading to preschool. Amy and I attended orientation night for the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool. Above, eager moms sign up for parent helper days at the school (more photos are here). We were able to meet fellow parents, hear more about solving the delays in opening the Cabbagetown Campus, and learn about the background of the Reggio Emilia approach. It’s a fascinating approach, and more of a philosophy than a curriculum like some other methods. Founded shortly after WWII in the small Italian town of the same name, the approach focuses on exploration, empowerment of even the youngest child, problem solving and expression of all forms. I think Sam’s going to love it. More on the approach on the GPCP web site is here.

Grant Park Cooperative Preschool parents Jack and Kim Sobel graciously offered to donate 15% of the night’s proceeds from their newest restaurant, the Cajun-inspired Redfish, toward the start up costs for the new Cabbagetown campus. Above, our friend Laura tries to entertain her daughter Shoshanna AND eat dinner at the same time. Always a difficult task, alas. Amy, Sam and I headed over for a lovely meal (mmmm, shrimp and grits!) amid many rowdy children. A good time was had by all! More photos are here.

Parents of kids entering the Cabbagetown campus of the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool gathered again this weekend to move from demolition into construction. Highlights for me - working with Dave to put up the beadboard in the entryway - and learning to use the nail gun. Good times. Gallery is here.

Parents of kids entering the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool’s new Cabbagetown facility this Fall gathered to gut much of the interior of the building in preparation for renovations through the next few months. Sam will be joining the ‘Cats’ group in just a few months for two days a week. Most enjoyable: knocking down the 2×4s with a mallet. Least fun: pulling up the linoleum flooring. But all in all, a good time for a good cause. I know I’ll be holding this labor over my son’s head in the future. Who knew tearing stuff down could be so much fun?
Sunday 6/4 Update: I’ve added images from day two of ‘demolition’, when we actually began construction activities, putting up drywall, spackling over the screws, and framing out the new doorway and walls for part of the improvements.

We’ve had a busy Saturday. First we were off to the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool’s organizational meeting for their new Cabbagetown campus where Sam will be headed this Fall. I’ll be on the communications/tech committee where I can cause the most trouble apply my skills. Later, while Amy was at rehearsals for the Atlanta Opera’s upcoming Tosca performances, Sam and I took a nice walk and were hanging on the porch. Amy came home, and Sam helped out with some pruning of the ivy, as you can see above. Click here for the full gallery.
