C|Net.com reports on a new feature user-generated content play YouTube rolled out yesterday – the ability to recieve and post content sent directly from mobile devices. As evidenced by the role Flickr has played in events like the London 7/7 bombings, still images have flown around the web like wildfire in our mobile-happy world. Video has been more challenging, although major news outlets have carried some of these grainy clips on-air and on-line. But this new feature at YouTube suggests the next major news story may include plenty of citizen journalism video coverage if this feature gets even modest adoption.

CNN Enhanced on Dish is in the Wild…

TVWeek (free registration required) may have been the first to report this, under the headline ‘Interactive TV Gets a Big Boost’ – CNN has launched their first major one-screen interative TV application. I was the product manager on this effort, and it’s great to see the trades picking up on it. If you have Dish, please check it out and let me know your thoughts. The app combines photos and stories from CNN.com you can read while the CNN linear network continues to play in squeezeback. So for those couch potatoes among us who want a little more control over your news, this one’s for you! The TV Week story goes on with an interesting quote from Ian Olgeirson, an analyst with Kagan Research: “Certainly, being able to deploy the application to more than a small amount of customers is pretty critical to making the model work on any level,” he said. Still, ITV is not likely to lure new customers, he said.”
- TV Newser has also picked this up.
- CNNMoney.com has the PRNewswire story.
- Multichannel News and UPI also have short mentions.
- What’s Happening at CNN has a slew of screenshots.
Update (2/20/06): MediaPost has a story focused on the OpenTV back-end details. A nice quote from Joel Hassell, the SVP/GM at OpenTV who notes the value of the application providing content from CNN.com to a satellite television viewer:

Workin’ Through New Years
Instead of spending New Year’s with my family to welcome in 2006, I’ve joined my other extended family in the Time Warner Center in NYC as we launch CNN.com on our very own ad server, DoubleClick’s Dart Enterprise system. We’ve been busting our butts on this for several months, and today’s efforts have gone amazingly smoothly, with teams in both Atlanta and here in NYC making everything work out. Follow this link to the gallery.

PC Magazine has just published a review of CNN Pipeline – the closing sentence has a really nice ring to it:
CNN Pipeline isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly the most impressive video offering the Web has ever seen.
