Thundersnow in Atlanta

I think it’s been some twenty years since I actually experienced that rare phenonmenon known as ‘thundersnow.’ But that’s just what we had today in Atlanta. Aside from it being March, and that we haven’t had an accumulating snowfall in at least four+ years, the thundersnow was icing on the cake. It’s so eerie the way the sound is muffled by the thick, heavy snow. I’ll never forget a nighttime storm in Boston years ago when I was out photowalking, and saw lightning illuminating the inside of the snow clouds. Amazing. Don’t expect this storm to have enough legs to make it to the evening hours here – it reportedly is going to even dust my hometown of Savannah after midnight tonight. Craziness.

Photos above are from a brief walk around Grant Park with Sam this afternoon. Both his shoes and my own were quickly soaked through from the copious amounts of slushy mix on the ground. Sam (and dad) enjoyed it immensely.

Home for the Holidays

See the post a few entries down. After way too much travel in 2008, we spent the entire holidays staying close to home, playing tourist in our own town. Several friends came through as well – always a good excuse to hit the aquarium. We hung out at the High. We brought our kids together with friends as much as we could. We attended more Hannukah parties than I can recall – and ate far too many latkes. It was a rejuvenating experience to not push ourselves to get on the road. I think we’ll do it again soon!

Ol’ Sparky

Well, it happened again. Unlike last time the sparking power lines outside our house didn’t result in any fried electronics – that I’ve spotted yet. But in a similar fashion, I was sitting at my desk and heard a popping noise outside, looked and saw our powerlines across the street jumping around. There’s no wind tonight, so I couldn’t figure it out – suspected a car might have hit a pole down the street or something. Well, it was a large oak branch that fell down the street, and our lines did an impromptu fireworks show for us. Thankfully, nothing was hit other than the power lines, and we kept power throughout.

Orange Sky

Atlanta Sky #2
I’ve honestly never seen a sky this color. Just after a big line of storms blew through on Sunday evening, the setting sun (already below the horizon) began to throw off the most interesting orange cast in the low clouds. I took advantage of the graduated neutral density filter I just bought for my trip to Aspen to handle the large dynamic range between sky and foreground. I like the result. Crazy.
