Oy. The water cooler is abuzz today with the unusual ending of the eight-year-run of the Sopranos last night. So much so, that for a time last night, the influx of users took down the HBO.com web site immediately after the episode aired. The NYTimes has a good review as well if you’ve already seen it. And the message boards at HBO.com are flooded with both positive and negative commentary. Anyway, if you have Tivo’d the show and haven’t had a chance to watch yet and don’t want to see any spoilers, stop reading now.

Spoiler Alert - Stop Reading now if you haven’t seen the finale!

People are up in arms. By I rather think it was poetic. Nearly every episode of the Sopranos to date closed with a song playing at the end of the last scene, continuing into the credits, typically tied to the mood of the episode, often with a sly ironic nod to the viewer. This episode took the opposite tact - the music was everywhere, from the classic rock rousting the M-16-toting Tony from his hideout early in the show, to at last, the insider’s joke of Tony twirling the table-top jukebox looking for ‘just the right song’ to accompany his exit-stage-left swan song from one of televisions most memorable shows and the music, and show, ending abruptly in silence on the word ‘don’t stop,’ with a black screen giving way to the silent credits.

It’s obvious that there was no ‘right song’ for Tony to choose, just as there was no ‘right ending.’ Part of the audience would have screamed bloody murder if Tony had gone down in a hail of bullets, others would revolt if he had gone to jail for life. There was no legitimate ending that would satisfy the ouevre that is The Sopranos. So regardless of what happened in that diner when it seemed like everyone’s cable (or in my case, my finicky DVR from Comcast) went out. Did one of the suspicious characters open fire on the entire family? Or did A.J. get over his depression, Meadow go on to ‘fight the state’ as a lawyer, and Tony - what of Tony? Fighting a federal indictment? Dead? It doesn’t really matter. And that’s what David Chase showed us - that there was no answer to this most realistic of family dramas. Happily ever after or massacred together, neither resolution would feel authentic. Ambiguity let’s us all decide, and The Sopranos live on in American television history.

ps - I loved the spooky cat, as Paulie, the last of Tony’s original crew, sunned himself on the sidewalk. The cat seemed to represent all those members of the extended family that had gone on to another place. Gone, but not forgotten.

segway at open championship

Watching the Open Championship (aka The British Open to us Yanks), I thought I spotted an unusual mode of transportation being used by one of the roving camera positions. A quick search of the wires found the image above - a television cameraman operating a steadicam rig atop a Segway was in fact following the golfers. Having chased the likes of Tiger, Norman, Els and the rest of them in the past, I know how heavy all that gear can be - seems like a perfect application of Dean Kamen’s technology. In the image above by AP Photographer Alastair Grant), you can see the driver has the rig aimed backwards at the group walking down the fairway - probably a lot easier this way than fast-walking backwards into one of those pot bunkers! I’m pretty sure this is a custom version of the XT model - while they do sell a version of the scooter adapted for the player with more money than sense that also carries their golf bag (the GT), I don’t see a camera-ready version on their site.

With the 37th season premiere coming up on August 14th, the Sesame Workshop will introduce their first new female character in 13 years.

The new character, Abby Caddaby, will use the catchphrase “that’s so magic.” The muppet is a pink “fairy-in-training” who uses rhyme and magic to express herself. A Sesame Workshop release described her as “a youngster who knows just enough about magic to get herself in a jam but not always enough to get out of trouble.” via TV Week

Celebrity guests for next season include Jamie Foxx, singer John Legend, “Today” show host Matt Lauer, and comedian Amy Sedaris. No word if her brother will join her to scare the children. Sam was heard muttering at the news:

“They better not cut Elmo’s screen time, or there will be h#*^l to pay!”

Although I never had time to blog about it at the time, I wanted to mention that I had the most enjoyable time during the annual Masters golf tournament watching the action unfold in glorious high-definition. Sunday featured an unexpected continuation of the third round beginning at 8 a.m., wingedfoot.pngand Sam and I had a grand old time watching the early-morning light paint the pine trees lining the Augusta National fairways. HDBeat is reporting today that the HD-bug will extend to NBC when they air the U.S. Open from Winged Foot in New York on June 15-18. I hope to see every bit of that one in HD too.

It’s amazing what’s available on the web today. Who needs user-generated content when you can post network TV? Guba.com appears to be like most of these services - another storehouse for UGC material. Some enterprising soul has searched that site for nuggets - not gold, mind you, but network and cable television full episodes. They’ve organized all that content into another site - peekvid.com - that offers up a nice handy list of episodes from shows like 24, Family Guy, Monty Python and The Sopranos. Not that these can’t be found on BitTorrent, but I can see the cease-and-desists flying through the air now… (via Thomas Hawk by way of Digg).

Just weeks after closing their deal to buy Meedio, a software developer of a ‘roll-your-own’ digital entertinament solution akin to Microsoft’s Windows XP Media Center Edition, Yahoo! has put a branded version of the software out for free download. called Yahoo! Go. Download the software here and give it a spin. It includes features to access video, music and photos on your local PC, as well as TV tuner integration should you have one, including DVR features. I do wish the Flickr piece was a bit more feature-rich; currently there’s no way to select your own photos or specify a tag to view, it simply includes a half-dozen or so pre-selected tags/groups to view as slideshows. One nice bit of integration is the ‘Video’ area - with Yahoo video content presented alongside your own, as well as search features for other video content. Overall, a very nice UI with a ton of features.

TVWeek (free registration required) may have been the first to report this, under the headline ‘Interactive TV Gets a Big Boost’ - CNN has launched their first major one-screen interative TV application. I was the product manager on this effort, and it’s great to see the trades picking up on it. If you have Dish, please check it out and let me know your thoughts. The app combines photos and stories from CNN.com you can read while the CNN linear network continues to play in squeezeback. So for those couch potatoes among us who want a little more control over your news, this one’s for you! The TV Week story goes on with an interesting quote from Ian Olgeirson, an analyst with Kagan Research: “Certainly, being able to deploy the application to more than a small amount of customers is pretty critical to making the model work on any level,” he said. Still, ITV is not likely to lure new customers, he said.”

Update (2/20/06): MediaPost has a story focused on the OpenTV back-end details. A nice quote from Joel Hassell, the SVP/GM at OpenTV who notes the value of the application providing content from CNN.com to a satellite television viewer:

“Television is ubiquitous, but the Internet is not, as yet–so you have a number of households that can get a real benefit in terms of staying connected.”

I’m happy to announce that the Trotz household has finally entered the HDTV-age. Since I’ve been working for a broadcast company heavily involved in HD technologies for the last several years, I’ve been eager to experience this at home. After much research, agonizing, and negotiations with my lovely wife, we purchased a Sony KDS-R50XBR1 Grand Wega SXRD rear projection television last weekend. We talked about buying the 60″ version - Best Buy was selling both the 50 and 60 for the same price - but Amy knew that the 60″ would be waaaay to big for our living room.

I finally cancelled my DirecTV service last week - the constant outages and costs to upgrade to support HD (a new dish for $300, a new HD-DVR for $500-1000, new boxes for my other two rooms ($250+)). So we’ve been enjoying free over-the-air HD. It’s kinda sick that there is such a beautiful TV signal just floating in the air for anyone to pickup. I’m looking forward to today’s visit from the Comcast guy however - they should be bringing Motorola’s latest and greatest - the 6412 dual-tuner DVR. That baby has all sorts of features I’m eager to check out, including the ability to output recorded HD content over it’s Firewire ports to a Mac.I can finally get back to seeing how our own networks look, especially the Law and Order HD channel. Oops, I mean TNT!

Cnn1 You go Wolf! On the debut of Wolf Blitzer’s new show yesterday, our favorite blog reporters Jacki Schechner and Abbi Tatton held a webcam interview with Joichi Ito, who then wrote about the interview on his blog. Joichi explains that Abbi had found him via a mention on another weblog (BuzzMachine) where Jeff Jarvis discussed Ito’s op-ed piece on the anniversary of the use of nuclear weapons over Japan. Macworld UK also talks about the use of the technology.

The New York Daily News is reporting an a curious gadget designed to filter out the Fox News Channel. The little device screws in-line between your incoming TV signal and the RF input on your television (standard cable only) and blocks Fox News. Pretty damn funny.
