listening to stories

As we prepare for the new baby, I realize I’m blogging far less often about Sam, so we are going to try to rectify that. He passed a big milestone today - I taught him how to tell a joke.

  • Knock-knock.
  • Who’s there?
  • Boo. Boo who?
  • Don’t cry <daddy, mommy, etc>

He even ‘gets’ it - giggling everytime he tells it. Very astute for his 2.5 years, methinks.

We passed an important milestone yesterday. After dad ran around all weekend gathering the nuts, bolts, plywood base, mattress pad, sheets, comforter, pillow, etc for Sam’s new ‘big-boy bed,’ I had the pleasure of tucking him in for the first time last night - and our big guy slept through the night on his brand-new twin bed. I’ll have to sneak in and grab a photo in the morning and add to this post later on. Now there is room for Trotz 2.0 in Sam’s crib, expected in two weeks now, and counting.

another hit!
Before I head off on my adventure to the far East, I wanted to post a few photos of our little guy. There’s this book - Something Queer is Going on at the Ballpark - that he just loves. It involves these two elementary school girls, one who is an amateur detective (see SQIGOATCafeteria, as well as others) and the other, in this case, is on the baseball team. Someone steals her lucky bat and glove, and hijinx ensue. Well, Sam got tired of his wrapping-paper-roll-bat and a wad of tinfoil, so we picked up a t-ball set and some extra whiffle balls at Target. He loves it!

sidewalk art
Since getting Sam down for a nap has become a challenge lately, we’ve resorted to bribery. Sidewalk chalk, seen above, is one example. He loves to spend time on the front sidewalk scribbling, playing tic-tac-toe with us and just hanging out.

tush

Now that we are potty training (ah, the joy), Sam likes to jump up after he’s done his thing and go ride the footrest that goes with the rocking chair in his room. I couldn’t resist catpuring this snap last night while Amy was out playing a gig. Cute, no?

Jul 31

Trois GenerationsRita recently marked a significant milestone - her 80th birthday. The actual day was during the last week of June when I was in the midst of the CNN.com relaunch. We did manage to head down to Savannah to celebrate with a kiddush at my mom’s synagogue, Mickve Israel a few weeks back. The picture at right is by my brother Jerry, and catches us as we head into the kiddush. More photos are here.

head-to-head

A few weeks back we were in Savannah to visit Sam’s grandma, and the highlight of the trip for the little guy was the visit to the Roundhouse Railroad Museum. Only a few hundred yards from where my dad’s store Thrifty was located, this spot was always off-limites and behind tall fences when I was a kid. Abandoned from active use back in 1960s, I often picked blackberries in the adjacent fields as a kid, and recall vividly taking photos with my Canon AT-1 as the Ranger batallion from Hunter Army Airfield practiced urban combat in the abandoned buildings in the early 80s. Anyway, it’s now a wonderful museum of train history, with at least a dozen old engines and cars, including the restored switching engine pictured above. One of Sam’s favorite books these days is The Little Engine that Could (sam loves this version the most), so seeing the tiny (not blue) engine pull the much larger full-size steam locomotive was a highlight of the trip. The ash that covered us was an unexpected memento of the visit requiring a good shower afterward, but seeing the little engine belching steam was pretty darn cool. These demos take place twice a day on weekends and are well worth checking out. For more photos, see the full gallery here.

crossing the savannah

So off we headed to Savannah this weekend for some quality time with Grandma Rita, Uncle Jerry, and Scarlett. We stayed downtown at the Mulberry Inn (very comfy, thank you) and hung out with family for most of the weekend. We did explore downtown and it’s environs with Sammy, who had a blast riding the water taxi across the Savannah River, going bumpity-bump down the cobblestone ramps to River Street, and hanging out with our friends the Suszynski’s and their nearly 5-year-old daughter Maddie.

dreaming before waking

A quick post of our little guy, catching a few last winks before Dad had to wake him to go to school this morning. He didn’t nap yesterday, and for the first time in forever fell asleep in my arms while I was telling him stories last night. I knew when he began snoring! He also woke up around 4am asking to hear one of his favorite songs - Thanks A Lot, by Raffi. Yeah, I know that music gets on some people’s nerves, but that particular song is in his bedtime iPod mix, and I always found it calming as can be. In this photo, he clutches his favorite blankie, made for him by our dear friend Alisa.  For the past several months, that’s the only thing he’ll allow in the crib with him when he does down to sleep. Precious!

sign of tomatoes to come

If only Atlanta weather could stay like this all year ’round! The weekend has been so beautiful. Mild, almost crisp mornings, not too hot in the afternoons. Amy says it’s like Aspen in the Summertime. Of course, we’ll be seeing the 90s here soon enough. These photos summarize what this time of year is all about - Sam working in the garden, Dad marinating some flank steak and grilling it up along with super-fresh asparagus and squash, and just-planted tomato plants in all their fuzzy glory beginning to bloom. 65 days and counting till we have some fresh goodies for our salads. Yum!
