SURPRISE!

Lisa is such a sneaky devil. She organized a fabulous 40th brithday surprise party last weekend for my childhood friend Jan. The weekend before, a small group of us had gathered for an outing at her fave Atlanta restaurant - Savage Pizza (margherita on whole wheat, 'natch) - as an excellent decoy to the *real* big event. While Jan may have been slightly suspicious with all the cleaning going on in the house, she was blown away by the assembled crowd of 40+ friends and family when she walked in. Enjoy the gallery here. But no, I have not posted the photo of Jan and I at our senior prom. Putting that on the web just doesn't seem like a good idea....

Sam revisits NYC
After Thanksgiving, I had work meetings Monday through Wednesday
in New York, so Amy and Sam joined me in the city. Here's a gallery of pics from that visit. Early plans to avoid Logan Airport on the Sunday after the holiday led us to book on the Amtrak Acela until a last-minute check on Saturday night revealed that the train provided no baggage check and limits riders to two bags per person. Not so helpful when traveling with baby Sammy. Booking the Delta Shuttle was quick, painless and no more expensive, and the afternoon at the airports was amazingly easy. The NY visit featured a walk through Times Square and past the Saks Fifth Avenue holiday windows, a date night for Amy and I at Carnegie Hall and Greek restaurant Molyvos, and a family dinner with the Golus/Trotz/Celedonia clans. The concert was wonderful - featuring the Boston Symphony Orchestra led by James Levine (who I spotted on our Delta Shuttle flight btw) playing one of Amy's faves, Mahler's 4th. The concert also featured Peter Lieberson's 'Neruda Songs,' a haunting set of movements set to Chilean poet Pablo Neruda's love sonnets. And the vocalist was Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, the composer's wife, 'natch. The New York Tims reviewed the concert's premiere the previous week in Boston. We sat with Amy's teacher Julie Landsman, principal horn of the Metropolitan Opera (also conducted by Levine). She's a peach of a person, and it was great to finally meet her.

Lullaby, and good night
I've been meaning to post this photo of Sam at his most precious. Here he catches a few winks on our bed when we were in upstate New York for a wedding a few weeks ago. Cute, cute and cute!

First Fireworks
![]()
Emily and Warren Hutmacher were kind enough to invite a crowd over to their place in Avondale Estates for July 4th. It's a cute little town in the Atlanta environs where Warren is the city manager and wields the unique power to tell them when to start the show. Trouble is, he couldn't control the weather, too. After a brief thunderstorm, Sam was able to enjoy his first fireworks. No crying! Amazing!

Happy Sam

I woke up late to find Amy and Sam having some quality happy time on the couch. Sam was giggling, cooing and generally having a grand old time. We just love that smile he gives when he's gassy happy. Check out the gallery here.

Sam on the Road
![]()
Well, not literally. But now Amy and I have a real understanding of military planning, logistics and supply lines. We packed the Rover full of gear to take Sam on his first road trip, down I-16/I-75 to Savannah on Memorial Day weekend. Grandma and Uncle Jerry enjoyed him immensely! See the photo gallery here.

Let's go see the baby...

Our dear friends Nikki and Paul were in town from Savannah this weekend, and high on their list of priorities was getting to meet Sam for the first time. Their daughter, Maddie, as well as our friend Shondra and her daughter Alondra came by to visit Saturday morning. Check out the photo gallery here.

Last weekend, our neighbors Michael & Rachel organized the annual Rosalia/Cameron Street block party. Neighbors from all over Grant Park attended the festivities, and Sam had a great time at his first post-utero musical event - a local blues band. Check out the gallery of photos here.

Snowy Gates
I'm in New York City through Saturday morning, and took the opportunity after meetings today at Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle to (a) experience the heavy snowfall that began this afternoon and (b) check out Cristo's 'Gates' project. My brain has a hard time with these - one side sees the Zen 'saffron' color and feels like it makes sense - while the other side of the noggin' sees a construction site. Anyway, the installation looks downright magical in the snow. Don't know if these images do it justice or not, but take a look. And for a different set of 'Gates', visit the Sommerville Gates project.

Ice Storm
Atlanta was hit by a major ice storm which began Friday night and continued into Saturday, and the lingering affects continue into Sunday. I've posted a gallery of images taken around our house - I didn't venture too far out as (a) I am still recovering from a nasty cold and (b) the roads were close to impassable with over one inch of solid ice. Amy's baby shower was postponed 24 hours due to the weather, and the Atlanta Symphony concert and dinner we'd planned to attend with my Mom, visiting from Savannah, were also cancelled. But the party will go on today, and mom's flight to West Palm Beach to visit her sister Hilda will be on Monday, instead of today.

Gallery: First trip to Highlands, NC
Amy and Joey headed to Highlands, NC for a great Fall trip to see the leaves, do some hiking, and rack up a slew of great Geocaching finds. We've loved the great mixture of fine dining (and wine lists!) along with the beautiful foliage so much, we've returned every year since then. Click here to see the photos.

Gallery: Isla Mujeres
Joey and Amy headed South of the Border (no, not that one) for our first vacation together in May of 2002. We picked the quiet island off of Cancun known as 'Isla Mujeres' or 'Island of Women.' I was strictly limited to the one, but that wasn't a problem. Click here for page one, here for page two, or here for the underwater pics.

Marty's 70th
Sherrie took Marty by surprise in May, 2002 with a surprise 70th birthday party. He was clueless! This was also the first time Amy brought Joey home to meet the entirety of the Handelman clan. Obviously, Joey survived. Click here for the gallery. It's clear that the Handelmans know how to have a great party.

I belong in the Zoo
Amy and I had a zoo date at Zoo Atlanta a few months after we began dating. I had just received my Canon 80-200L f/2.8 AF-IS lens, and took advantage of some very cooperative subjects. A few of these photos now hang on the walls of our home only blocks from the Zoo! Click on the image or here to see the gallery.
