360 Time
To complement our spiffy new HDTV, I managed to find an Xbox360 on eBay for not-too-high a premium. The Fedex guy came a day earlier than the tracking said it would (who knew that was even possible), and I was like a kid on the first night of Hannukkah as the delivery dude came up the front steps. In a word, the image this thing produces on the SXRD is stunning. I had picked up Project Gotham Racing, Madden 2006 and Kameo - and every one of them is just mind bogglingly beautiful. PGR is especially slick - driving the streets of NYC and seeing the skyline come hurtling toward you, driving past the casinos of Las Vegas by your headlights - all the while seeing true-to-life reflections and dirt on your windscreen. I've also partially hooked this up to our Dell PC running Media Center Edition 2005. I did have to update it to this year's patch, but once I did, the two machines saw each other easily. Now I can get photos, video and music from my desktop on the Sony in the living room. Spiffy! Embedded here in this post is my XboxLive 'GamerCard' that shows my current reputation, score and 'zone', whatever that is. It will also show any games I've gone online with.

May the handheld mayhem commence...
Woo doggy! While my local EBGames has no copies, and the one I ordered from Gamestop is backordered with no estimated delivery, I was seriously bumming earlier this week. Lo and behold, a friend here at work drops this copy into my hands - seems he didn't need this copy for a while. The game is excellent - it took a bit of time to get used to driving with the tiny stick, and I do wish the screen were larger. But it's like old home week revisiting good ol' Liberty City and my favorite hangouts. Certainly is easier to play knowing the rough city layout like the back of my hand. The wife doesn't appreciate the sound of mayhem coming from the PSP - but it's gotta be better than in the living room! 2 thumbs up so far for this one...

Gametap is Live!
Turner Broadcasting System's several-years-in-the-making broadband gaming service which I blogged about a few months back has launched to the public today.
Joystiq has coverage here, and Kotaku points out a set of viral faux-blogs intended to bring consumers into the new service.
There's at least five sites out there, as reported below by Joystiq:
- What is ADAT?: A site dedicated to people suffering from Third Dimensia
- Upgradius: Think Gizmondo for video game characters
- X-Treme Platform Jumping School: The name says it all
- First Person Get Aways: A travel agency that specializes in video game vacations
- Jalopixel: A game car site with a very Gawkerish name.
After you wander about these blogs you'll eventually get to the Gametap site, with this snarky little quote:
Well played. You found us out. That page you just came from? Not real. And there's more like it out there. You see, you've fallen prey to one of our little traps to make friends with the world. We want to be your friend.
I'm not going to get into the arguments of fake marketing blogs. Draw your own conclusions. I'm just happy to see Gametap finally exposed to the public. I've been fooling with the app for a while, and it's pretty entertaining to go back to the games of our youth, and to have access to some more recent PC titles I was too lazy to go out and buy. There's some discussion on Joyqstiq about most of this being available via emulators and ROMs, but even if those are free, they are buggy, often a pain to setup, etc. I think it's worth a few bucks to package these older titles in a cohesive manner, and let me drop in, play, and drop back out when I have a few moments. Oh, and the classic photo from Joystiq at the top of this entry is definitely a keeper.

Official GTA Liberty City Stories Web Site Launches
Oh my my. Rockstar Games has launched a website dedicated to what looks to be the PSP killer app - Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. The site has an amusing backstory for the pending Playstation Portable title, including a link to a fake Ammunation.net site. The site features emails to a reporter at the Liberty City daily rag, the 'Liberty Tree', all rendered in yellow-on-blue CC:Mail glory and give us some insight as we not-so-patiently wait for the release of the game on October 24th.

Ads in games, ads not in games
Video game advertising company Massive recently signed a deal with Vivendi to integrate 'live' advertisements within their titles. The first title was the strategy-shooter SWAT4. As one might expect, gamers took about two seconds to find a way to block the origin of the ads. Details here. Nothing a dedicated anti-marketing gamer wouldn't have already done to block ads on his favorite gaming sites - disallowing ads.* in your hots.etc file is an old trick to block web ads - but it's probably not going to be long before a patch is going around to enable this with a simple Doubleclick of the mouse (pardon that ad-related pun, please) to allow the less-technical gamers to avoid these in the future.
Gamers love to hack these titles (see 'Hot Coffee'); if in-game ad technology is going to take off, it's going to need to be smarter about how these features are implemented. And I have to guess that there may not be too many sponsors who would be happy to see that hostage's blood spattered on their ad if the player is too slow and the terrorists get to her first. Or maybe that's just me.
Link: Details of how the hack was found are here.

Coke downloads for Wipeout Pure
Coca-Cola is creating custom content for the PSP game Wipeout Pure, available only to users in Japan as of now. The content will include new ships, courses, menu graphics etc. This is, AFAIK, the first time a sponsor has developed this type of 'add-on' functionality for a portable title like this. Could this be where the much-discussed advertising dollars start being spent to reach the refugees from traditional media who spend their time blowing stuff up sted watching the boob tube?

GTA: Liberty City Stories First Look
PSM has an in-depth look at GTA: Liberty City Stories for the Playstation Portable and boy is it juicy. I think this may be the killer PSP app to date.
Guns? Check. Carjacking? Check. A fully realized 3D world in which you are free to do pretty much anything you want, including meeting with shady characters who send you on missions of questionable legality? Check, check and check. Yep, this is GTA all right.
This GTA takes place in the Liberty City of GTA 3, but this time around you play as Tony Cipriani, the guy who handed out missions in 3 - that role was voiced by Michael Madsen - hope he's back in this version too.
Taking place three years before the events of GTA3, that's about 1998 or so, for those who dont want to do the math- Liberty City Stories follows Toni Cipriani as he moves up in the criminal world. While it may not seem like it, three years is alot of time, and there are bound to be some changes. For example, three years before Sex Club 7 became the place where Luigi (Joe Pantoliano) gave work to the mute GTA 3 protagonist, the strip club was called Paulie's Revue Bar.
The game sounds like it's packed with almost everything that we love about Rockstar games, no, that doesn't mean it's just really, really violent. Liberty City will be a truly open-ended game, feature tons of customization and lots of vehicles to jack.
According to the article, the game will support downloadable content, but Rockstar is still being tight lipped about whether it will offer up WiFi multiplayer, MP3 support, etc.

Creating the Xbox 360's Interface
Design Interact has a fascinating story up that talks about the two-year process of designing the Xbox 360's user interface. The process included Microsoft designing their own Flash-like animation tool, working with design firm AKOA and narrowing ten ideas down to one. The end result is a sucked in interface that resembles the console's own sleek design and features the ability to quickly cycle through games, photos and other entertainment capabilities.

Xbox 360 gonna have a qwerty controller?
Update: This image came from a demo Microsoft did in Spain, showing off this detachable QWERTY keyboard for the controller, plus lots of other goodies. LINK
This might make the whole Media Center Extender experience built-into the Xbox 360 a whole lot more useful for those applications requiring more text input than you'd want to hunt and peck with an on-screen virtual keyboard.

Juicy Bits about Xbox 360 Extender
Jason Dunn got a peek at the XBox 360 the other day and reported about it on his site. To reduce it to some key bullets:

- Emerald will increase country support from 13 to 33
- Emerald will enable XBox 360 support
- Emerald will not include cable/sat HDTV support (current gen already supports OTA HD)
- XBox 360 will render the full smooth MCE experience as expected
- XBox 360 will support high-definition playback as expected
- XBox 360 does not support visualisations for music
- XBox 360 will include a short remote for basic functions, a longer full remote will be available for sale separately

Turner Announces GameTap Broadband Service
Woooo doggy! My employer, Turner Broadcasting, took the wraps off a project which has been in the works for around two years, the broadband gaming service dubbed GameTap. Following the model which has created robust businesses from archival content like Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies, GameTap will be a subscription service allowing users to play hundreds or even thousands of game titles, going all the way back to early arcade classics. Reuters has this quote from my coworker Blake Lewin who created this product:
"We have a brand new network ... but Turner's in the same business it's always been...We want to program games as if they were TV shows."
The service will leverage the same infrastructure built by the team I've been working with here for years - serving CNN.com, SI.com and NASCAR.com.
In a world where new game titles are often known years in advance of their release, this skunk works project has been in development for over two years, with nary a leak, despite a team of more than 100 members.

Half-Life2 Update Released
So after having 'lost' my install disc for HalfLife2, I thought I had blown the $50 I'd spent on the game and would never get to play it on my our new Dell XPS machine. Well, in our ongoing nesting in preparation for the baby, I discovered the missing install disc in a CD case beside my bed. I'd literally torn my office (home and work) apart looking for this. Anyway, that let me install the game this morning. When I launched the game, I was expecting Valve's Steam service to apply various patches, inform me what was new in them, etc. Read on to see the amazing set of realism enhancements they added to the game in the latest release.
The copy below comes from the Valve Half-Life2 Steam client news update:
Friday, April 1 2005An update is available for Counter-Strike: Source. The update will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. This update addresses requests for more realism in Counter-Strike: Source. The changes are as follows:
Features/Additions
Doubled player speed when jumping. The effect to cumulative, so the more you jump, the faster you go.
Cut price of AWP by 50%.
Added akimbo Riot Shield to buy menu.
Removed de_dust from mapcycle.
Realism Enhancements:Knives:
Between rounds, it is suggested that you unsheath the weapon and repeatedly press the attack key to air it out as the leather now collects moisture and creates pits on the blade, making it less effective in the next round.Shotguns:
1. Firing the shotgun without ammo loaded will now cause it to jam.
2. When the shotgun jams, press F2 to fill out form DA-1823-00/A12-H8.
3. You should then hear a scribbling sound. When it stops, press F3 to send the request to LIDM.
4. Failure to do paperwork before pressing F3 will result in the immediate return of the unrepaired shotgun.
5. The repairs can take 1-2 rounds for completion. During that time, you cannot purchase a replacement firearm and may only use your sidearm or knife.Player Models:
Several models now feature eyewear. This is a completely cosmetic enhancement with the following exceptions:Part EP-7829-292-2 must be purchased and worn correctly at all times in order to see during the round.
In between rounds, you may purchase and use part EC-2231-833-H34 to clean your EP-7829-292-2. Note: that this does not clean the eyewear itself!
To clean the eyewear, you need to purchase and use the designated cleaner, EC-2231-233-H34, EC-2231-523-H34, or EC-2231-239-H34a respectively depending on your model's eyewear. You can determine the part # of the correct cleaner by asking someone.
Machine and submachine guns:
At least once every five rounds, press F1 to inspect the weapon:
A musical cue indicates that the inspection has started. Now press F1 again repeatedly to clean and lubricate the weapon.Your Preventative Maintenance Status (either "cleaning" or "lubricating") is determined by the speed with which you press the F1 key and will be displayed above your head.
To accurately simulate real life maintenance mistakes, pressing F1 too quickly will lubricate either the bolt face or the trunnion block. Pressing F1 too slowly sprays lubricant directly into the buffer tube. All mistakes render the gun inoperable, though this may not become immediately apparent.
Experiment with keypress timing to avoid (and discover!) other common maintenance errors.
In order to balance the improved stopping power of a well-maintained weapon, the reloading process has been made much less reliable.
When reloading, you should listen for two or three distinct clicks over a period of several seconds.
If you hear one click or no clicks or more than two clicks, you've bent the link ejector chute and the gun will most likely explode on the next attempt to fire it, though it may not.
PS - In case you haven't figured this out - it's an April Fool's joke. Hilarious, really.

Brothers in Arms out, Gets High Marks
![]()
The first review of the PC version of Brothers in Arms is out, and there are high marks all around. IGN.com offers up a 9.1 rating, and this closing paragraph sums up their take:
Like most of us here at IGN, I'm still a huge fan of Call of Duty and Battlefield 1942. While those games have their own unique strengths, Brothers in Arms takes some of the best features of each and adds an entirely new tactical dimension. Offering up engaging, squad-based battles and presenting it all in an authentic yet undeniably cinematic setting, Brothers in Arms is a game that, to borrow a phrase from General Patton, "grabs you by the nose and kicks you in the ass."Fedex.com reports that my copy arrived in the Atlanta sort facility last night, so there's gonna be some Nazi-killing on the ol' XPS 2nite!

Fable Goodness
![]()
Gamespot today is reporting that there will be a PC version of Fable coming to us soon. Screenshots, story here at Gamespot.com. I really enjoyed this game on the Xbox, and look forward to this version on the PC. Gamespot's report below:
Microsoft today announced that the popular Xbox game Fable is headed for the PC this fall, under the name Fable: The Lost Chapters. The much-hyped game was released on Microsoft's console last September and was developed by Big Blue Box, which is owned by Black & White developer Lionhead Studios.
My guess is that the PC will make for a better experience with this game - the controls were quite obtuse on the Xbox version, and this type of role-playing game should be a perfect fit on the PC.

Flamin' Xbox
![]()
Microsoft said Thursday it will recall 14.1 million power cords for its Xbox video game console after a defect gave some users minor burns and scorched carpets.
Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer for Microsoft, told Reuters the recall covered all Xboxes made for continental Europe before Jan. 13, 2004, and the rest of the world before Oct. 23, 2003.
Since I've been playing Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas on my PS2 almost exclusively lately, not a big deal. Here's a link to the MSFT site with info on ordering the replacement cord. You'll need your serial number and manufacture date off your Xbox to place the order.

Halo2 and RSS
![]()
As Joystiq puts this, 'Stats Ahoy!' A previously under reported feature of Halo2 is the ability to access gamertag and clan statistics as XML on Bungie.net. I haven't fooled around with this, but it sounds quite intriguing. If I had more time to play the damn game, I might dig into this and add my (lame) stats to Trotz.com, but that will have to wait. Still interesting concept I'd like to see in more games. Bungie.net's explanation of how this works and a page here with a collection of Halo2 stats tools.

Don't be a Playa Hater
![]()
Halo 2 - The greatest thing since sliced bread, right? We've heard it all. 9.4 rating from Gamespot editorial, 9.0 from their users. A whopping 9.8 from IGN edit, and 9.5 from their readers and their survey of other media types. Well, Halo 2 doesn't completely float my boat. I do like it for short bouts. It's run, gun and run some more in multiplayer, and while entertaining, doesn't have quite the subtle gameplay I think it's capable of. Well, in an enourmous review, this fellow offers up the most honest review of Halo 2 you'll ever see. Take a gander - it weighs in at over 7,000 words, but it's worthwhile.

ESPN Joins the Dark Side
In the 'If you can't beat them, join them' category, the New York Times reports today (free registration required) that ESPN has signed a 15-year deal with Electronic Arts giving EA exclusive rights to the ESPN brand in video games. Guess EA is looking at that NFL deal as an even smarter move now. So the big question is - will the new NFL flagship EA game have some Frankenstein-like title? I'm sorry, but 'ESPN-Madden NFL2k6' just doesn't roll off the tongue.

Brothers in Arms Preview
Among the games I want to get my hands on this year, Brothers in Arms tops this list. Combining the best of the scripted action in Call of Duty with the type of 'squad commander' tactics seen in Full Spectrum Warrior, this game should be amazing. Your mission begins as you parachute behind enemy lines on D-Day and lead your team throughout the campaign.
Gamespot has a great preview of the multiplayer version of the game up today. The multiplayer scenarios sound great - not your usual 'capture the flag' abstract b.s., but more sensible missions. Nice.
I saw a preview of the game when it was being shown by Katscratch of the Frag Dolls at the Microsoft Digital Entertainment Everywhere event iin Los Angeles in October, and the early build she was playing looked every bit as good as this screenshot. Judicious use of soft light bloom lends a very nostalgic feel to this one, and surprising visual effects like dirt which splashes onto your character's 'glasses' when you happen to be too close to explosions lend to the mood here. And from what I hear, anyone who might have seen these settings in real life under fire might have a flashback or two seeing this game - the dev team did extensive work on-site for accuracy.
Release is set for February 22nd.

Marathon is Dead, Long Live Marathon!
![]()
MacSlash reports on the public release (for free download, but not to the open-source community) of the seminal Marathon Trilogy by Bungie. You know them - makers of Pathways into Darkness, Myth, Oni -- and a little game called Halo/Halo2?
Way back in the day, when we had a couple of bad-ass Quadra 900s and CX's networked in our design office at The Augusta Chronicle, my buddies and I would stay after work until close to dawn chasing one another around with flamethrowers, shooting BOBs with dual pistols, and making myself motion sick. Ah, those were the days.
Now, with this release by Bungie.org we can experience these games on the latest and greatest hardware!

Fable Does NOT Suck
![]()
So I'm pissed at Gamespot. In their annual wrap-up of the year in gaming, they have chosen Fable as the winner of the dubious 'Most Disappointing' category. Yeah, yeah - I know someone has to win, but Peter Molyneux's outstanding game really didn't deserve it. Sure, Molyneux has a big mouth - and led the gaming public on to expect all sorts of subtelty which wasn't eventually in the game, leading to his public apology, but gimme a break. The game was *extremely* open-ended, and the way you could influence your character's appearance via morality was unprecedented. And a hell of a lot of fun to play. Gamespot did get one thing right - Silent Storm is the best game of 2004 that nobody played.

Buh-Bye to ESPN NFL2k6
![]()
Unless you don't mind playing NFL games where 'KC #10' passes to 'KC #87" instead of 'Chiefs QB Trent Green passes to wide receiver Eddie Kennison', you are not going to be pleased with this news. The NFL and Players Inc. today announced an exclusive deal with Electronic Arts granting a five-year exclusive right to the NFL's teams, stadiums, and players across PCs, consoles, and handhelds. Five companies reportedly bid for this exclusive right, and EA came out on top in the undoubtedly high-priced bidding war. Why is this bad news? Exclusivity sucks for the consumer on all fronts. I hate my DirecTV (fade out, spotty service), but I'm reluctant to drop it 'cause I love Sunday Ticket. Guess what - DirecTV is the only licensee for that. Same deal here - ESPN's NFL2k5 is a much better game than this year's Madden - I can only hope that EA steps up and improves their product. More at Gamespot, Slashdot. Joystiq suggests an alternative - Maximum Football. And get a load of this illustration on Joystiq as well - a bit of a strong statement, but it shows how people feel...

Noodle Theme Park
For those fans of the seminal ramen-cult film, Tampopo, video game giant Namco plans to launch a theme park dedicated to these underappreciated bits of gluten. This is from the press release, via BoingBoing:
Today, [game company and Katamari Damacy publisher] Namco announced plans to open a ramen noodle theme park in the southern Japanese city of Nagoya. The "Nagoya Noodle Shop Alley," due to open for business on February 25, is meant to introduce visitors to the history of ramen noodles and the different types of ramen available around Japan. [ ...]
The visual theme of the park is intended to reflect Japan in the pre-war 1930s, but the ramen on offer are to represent the "new wave" of noodle development around the nation.
